| Listening To A Preacher Is Not "Worshipping" God.
Part of the psychological control done by professional church talkers is to mislabel, mix up, and misrepresent selected ideologies in the minds of their congregations. Do not misunderstand this. In their hearts they think they are doing the right thing. They are just doing what they have been trained to do, and what they are expected to do. An example is to call a church service a "worship" event, when in fact it is not part of any worship act to sit and listen to a sermon. Unless, of course, the congregation is worshipping the preacher and his words, as happens with the more renowned preachers of today. Naturally, creative minds will try to say that a "spirit of worship" includes listening to the Word of God being spoken by a pastor. But, are all of a pastor's spoken words in his sermon the actual Word of God? Or, has he mixed into the Word of God his opinions, observations, desires, expectations, feelings, hopes, and speculations, calling the resultant mixture "The Word of God?" Did not Satan do that very same thing with the Word of God in the Garden of Eden, and in Jesus' Temptation in the Wilderness? Shelli. |

Your title implies correctly... simply listening to a preacher alone is not worshiping God. A true Christian will most likely understand this pretty easily. Sounds like you've been exposed to quite a dose of the denomination world of worship. So... you have given us what we could probably label as a common problem with many so called church worship services of today. Now give us the solution. Don't leave us hangin'... What do the "inspired Scriptures" tell us about worship, assuming you will allow yourself to give us your opinion of what the Scriptures say, similar to what a preacher (or maybe even Satan) would do.

I Corinthians 4:20, "For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power." A person presuming to "teach" is to demonstrate in his own life, with observable action, all he speaks for others to do. This is what Jesus and the Apostles did. If a preacher does not demonstrate all he verbally promotes, he then is a hypocrite, having a seperate standard for himself from a standard for others. That is why preachers are not to babble for 30-50 minutes at a stretch, because no man can demonstrate all he would preach from a pulpit for that amount of time. Look at it this way. A pastor who has attended seminary or Bible school to become a pastor has had to undergo much more academic processing to learn than just sitting and liteneing to words from a professor. He has had to: 1. Perform original study from references in a library. 2. Complete reviewed and graded assignments. 3. Submit to personal counseling with an advisor regarding his course of study. 4. Demonstrate personal work in his own writings, papers, and a possibly a thesis. 5. Take and pass examinations. 6. Complete some kind of field work as an intern. 7. Rise to a predetermined standard of achievement in order to graduate. 8. Show personal conduct at school consistent with true faith in Christ. The point is, he had to do far more than just show up and sit in a pew to learn. How can he expect his congregation to actually learn anything by just listening to him talk words a few times a week? Such is not the true teaching/learning process, and Jesus did not do it that way. Only a clever twisting of Scripture and reality, replete with excuses, will give an arguement to the contrary. Teaching is for believers, preaching is for unbelievers. Shelli. |

Shelli, you are not even aware of the difference between a pastor and a preacher. You are throwing a lot of opinion at us with no Scriptural support for it.

| ELDV: Where does "exhortation" fit into this paradigm? Plenty of examples abound from Acts 15 to 1 Corinthians 14 to many other passages about Christians exhorting Christians in the assembly. It sure sounds a lot like preaching. I would be wary of making hard and fast lines between concepts not so delineated in the Scriptures. ELDV

Shellie : Eph.4:11; He gave some as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. Our apostles today are found in the NT - the writings of Mt, Jn, Paul, etc. Our Prophets are found in the OT as well you can say writings of Mk. Lk. Jude, Jam. We do not have living apostles or prophets but we have what they taught the early church. The offices of the church today are 1. Evangelist - traveling teacher, to establish and strengthen congregations supported or not. 2. Pastor - elder, bishop, plurality of of these men to have the office in a church. Qualifications 1Tim.3:1ff 3. Teacher - to teach others. Preacher is not an office of the church, we may call men a preacher but that is not a position. In fact to preach in church is really redundant when you understand the word. Preach means to proclaim to the lost and it wasn't until 1867 that the term was used for speaking in a worship setting. Today all our preaching is done in worship, to the saved not the lost. The church needs women preachers - a preacher is one who proclaims the truth to the lost and it is not done in worship but to be done in the public. Everyone who is a Christian is a preacher, men and women, and when we think the one man up front is the preacher, we don't do our job, he is not a preacher, he is a teacher. Eph.3:12 for the equipping of the saints, for the work of service, to the building up of the body. The teacher is to teach the saints, building them up, so they can go and proclaim the Truth from God's word that the teacher shared with them. Ro.10:14,15 How will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? We need an army of preachers - the church members and they are sent every Sunday morning with a fresh message to share with their co-workers. Teachers need to simplify the word and give it relevancy for today. "Do you know what we learned in worship yesterday?" There is no difference between worship and classes for the first century Christians. In fact 1Cor.14 shows that the services were very interactive, so much that men had to take turns and only three could talk in any certain field, such as speaking in tongues, prophecying, etc. Yes today we fashion ourselves more after the middle ages type worship than the first century. 1st century was more of a class like setting, with everyone contributing and there was a teacher teaching but he did not have superiority. He was not called a pastor nor preacher. Everyone had their responsibilities and everyone was a contributing factor to the body of Christ. They were excited about what they learned from the OT scriptures, giving God thanks for the insight He blessed them with Ja.1:5 and worshiped Him collectively, with songs, prayers, Lord's Table and exhortation. Didn't Paul teach well past midnight. Paul claims He was an apostle, teacher and preacher. Apostle gave him the authority, teacher to the church and preacher to the lost. We belong to the restoration movement, but we cannot restore everything instantly, like being baptized, you don't understand the word completely but it takes years of growth, maturing into what you need to be and you grow along with your brothers and sisters. We all contribute to one another's progress or digress. We are not where we want to be, that's good in the fact it gives us the daily challenge to strive to be where we need to be, never giving up because of failures but pressing on because we know God will strengthen us to be victors. Just curious... what do you call what Paul did in Acts 20:7? He was delivering a message. That doesn't sound like an interactive classroom session. Was this part of worship or not?

We are to follow 1 Tim. 2:15 and no one can say that they knwo everything God has revealed because to do so would be to say that they know it all...and I won't say that myself. I for one wil keep digging in my treasure. Preaching for 30 minutes is not an instant knowledge for anyone but it will promote thought and from that it can proceed. Take the parable of the sower...the seed was planted but did a plant spring up automatically? No...it took some time and the same can be said of God's Word. When we plant and water....God will give the increase...we just have to be patient and keep preacing and teaching. But don't forget the point about what I said...EVERY Christian is to teach...so you can't leave yoursef out of the equation.

I certainly hope I didn't give the impression in any way that I was leaving myself out of the command to teach!!! I believe the great commission, while given directly to the apostles, applies to ALL Christians, both male and female. The role each plays and how they are to teach is a different matter.

| Re: Listening To A Preacher Is Not "Worshipping" God.
I understand why many people don't like preaching, or question the need for it. After preaching for the last 15 years and after listening to others for another 30, I understand the frustration. We should remember, however, that God thinks a lot of preaching. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 1:21, "For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." The reason for preaching is that it communicates the power of God, which is the gospel (Romans 1:16). This is what we are commanded to do (Matt 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). Note in these verses we are not only commanded to preach the gospel to every creature, but we are also to be "teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you..." Of course, God could have imparted salvation to man in several other ways, but he chose preaching. Why did he choose that particular way? (Another thinkin' question.) I have found that just the delivery of a sermon is not the kind of preaching people need. The lessons that serve best are simple ones that make application. From what I've read in these posts, that's what's lacking. Lessons should be from a man who applies them to his life and points how they should be applied to our lives.---------John |

| Re: Listening To A Preacher Is Not "Worshipping" God.
Shelli, You need to read what the scriptures say about preaching. If you believe the preaching is shallow or empty, you may be right. I have heard many a preacher that was haughty, puffed up, lacked all knowledge, lacked any scripture or Truth. It does not mean the preaching or the preacher must be deleted. It just means the person must change and only apt teachers and preachers should be teaching and preaching. It is the congregation and elders responsibility to be sure the person is apt. The preaching, which is a form of proclamation, from which we are to learn from, must be sincere, Truth and applicable. To dismiss preaching, which is part of worship because when the Word is shared in the assembly, those that listen are to be engaged in contemplation, consideration, searching their hearts, comparing their state of life to the Word and Spirit of God. We need to be careful and think twice before we take the holy things of God and try to delete them, placeing one part of what God wants, ie. teaching and only to delete other things God said to do, preach. That is called transgression and is a sin. We also need to realize if our attention span is short, it is our own bodies and attidudes that monitor that clock. Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. I did a quick search of the word preach and came up with the following. Be prepared, it is a lot. It proves the point though, that preaching should always remain until Jesus comes and God's people are to preach.
