Scientists, Theologians Debate Whether God Exists

Scientists, Theologians Debate Whether God Exists

Scientists hate God. Or find God very disturbing. In fact, modern science has found no evidence of God, and so it's stupid to think God exists.

The above statements are often presented as conventional wisdom, but are they true?

A new collection of short essays, discussed here Thursday at an event at the American Enterprise Institute, responds to that question with a more diverse set of voices than is usually offered.

Edited by Skeptic magazine publisher Michael Shermer and backed by the John Templeton Foundation, the booklet features replies by 13 scholars and thinkers to the question "Does science make belief in God obsolete?"

The practical answer is, "Of course not." Many people worldwide believe.

....

Yet many scientists — 40 percent according to a 1997 poll cited by Shermer — believe in God. This isn't big news to scientists, but might surprise people who rely on mainstream views of science.
The last statement is interesting and seems to follow with my experience.

Re: Scientists, Theologians Debate Whether God Exists

One particular brother that was an elder at the congregation where I grew up was an intellectual, named Cicero Bernard. He was a physicist and a professor that wrote many of the books that were used (you can search for them). I never knew him as he died before I was very old, but I was given many of his books.

He was asked how many in his science dept. were atheists, he claimed that there were none, in fact most of the scientists believed in the bible. He did say many in the English dept. were atheists. This was in the 60s or 70s.

Re: Scientists, Theologians Debate Whether God Exists

One of our elders holds a PhD in computer science. My husband used to be a fellow deacon with a brother who holds a PhD in chemistry. I know a brother who holds a PhD in physics and used to work in a "think tank" and was an elder. He left that glamorous job to go to preacher training school. My own brother is a bible teacher and holds a PhD in electrical engineering. His dissertation was in plasma physics. My father, former deacon and elder, still teaches bible. He just submitted his dissertation for review. Dicus, who wrote "Our God, He is Alive" was a professor at Tennessee Tech. Then there's all the guys at AP. So no, all scientists are not atheists, even though the ones who are would have you believe such. :holycow:

Re: Scientists, Theologians Debate Whether God Exists

Isn't it interesting that it was when science understood the existence of God that most scientific advancements were made. It is only in the last 30-40 years that science (by and large) left God and the advancements stopped.
