Hobby discussion

What are your hobbies? Any gardners, model builders, antique tractor nuts, etc?

I myself am a railroad buff. Something about a massive steam locomotive from an era long gone just facinates me. I have many other interest also. We may have many things in common.

I like those things too. One project that I did was convert much of my father-in-law's old 8mm film he took back in the 50's and 60's and converted it to DVD and set it to music. I then gave all my wife's family a copy. They loved being able to see themselves and the rest of the family 40-50 years younger again. It was a fun project.

Home theater...I here yuh!
My 50" TV went out a year ago and I replaced it with a hand-me-down 37". It went out three weeks ago so I moved my old faithful Sony 27" tube type TV into my den. My TV experience just keeps getting worse.

I am saving up to get something in Hi Def, hopefully by years end.
What size set do you have Sonnie?

Yeah, this stuff can be fun. Most of what I do involves either my kids or the church. Someday perhaps I'll start a small business doing this stuff. Or maybe not. Maybe then I'll focus on my grandkids. After all, that IS the reason for having children, right??

Re: Hobby discussion

I have always loved gardening, but have been forced to cut back to mostly mainenance and containers. We live in the midst of our wooded acres, and the wildlife, espacially deer, have taken over my old garden spot and our yard.
I have our deck lined on both sides with container plantings. Most of them I bring inside when cold weather approaches.

I love taking digital pictures of our yard and surrounding scenery, and posting them on forums. I have been a member of a gardening forum for 5-6 years.

Steven, There is a hunting season, you know. And shooting a doe is not open to much hunting. Neither are spotted fawns. Besides, we don't even care for whitetail deer meat.

Okay, there is more to our not hunting than what I said. Neither of us are up to the hunting or dressing out of the critters. We are old foggies...you know

You are all welcome to come and thin out the population on our acreage. You might even leave us with a little of the meat. I probably could cook it so it is edible.

Just give the meat away or bury them where they drop, they make great fertilizer. Your neighbors will say..."hey, their garden looks great and how do they keep the deer out of it? hummm..."

Re: Hobby discussion

"Confess your faults one to another..." O.K. I confess I love to uh, uh, rabbit hunt. In fact my son Keith and I raise those little Ol' beagle hounds for that very purpose. Nothing quite like listening to a pack of 5 or 6 beagles running a big Alabama swamp rabbit down through a creek bottom...that sound is what I call true "a cappella music." Rabbits and rice...yum, yum.

Re: Hobby discussion

I belonged to a community garden club in the town I live for 6 years. There where close to 40 members that each paid 10 dollars a year to lease a 30 X 30 piece of land at the site. All the water you needed was included in the price. It was a lot of fun fellowshipping with the other folks that belonged. I also learned a great deal and got a lot of useful tips from the people that had been gardening for a long time.

I had to give it up a few years ago, because I started my own business, and didn't have the time to maintain it properly. I would love to belong to the club some day after I retire.

Re: Hobby discussion

As some people here already know, one of my hobbies is computer animation, and you can see some of my work at http://www.geocities.com/evilsnack/irtc.htm

I'm also working on a 3d modeling application, and I play a lot of Runescape and Diablo 2.

Hey Marian,

I have a lot of deer down here too. When I was lamenting about it, this guy from WV said that he uses 4 lb. test fishing line as a deterrent.

If you go any heavier, they'll believe it is a fence and jump over.

If you go any lighter, they'll break through it.

But 4 lb. test scares them and they run away. Just string it up sort of criss cross like making a trellis for green beans.

I'm going to try it this year.

Re: Hobby discussion

Well let's seeeee...I'm not sure if I know the difference between a hobby and an addiction, LOL

I make rag rugs, quilt, sew, do some crocheting. I read all of the time. I garden, can my own food and am working on learning to remodel my old mobile home.

I like learning, period! If there's some skill to learn, I've been working on it or attempting to for awhile.

This year, Lord willing, I'm going to go bezerk with small fruits and fruit trees and vines.

Yeha! the WV solution for anything - fishin' line and duct tape. About the only thing it can't handle is a broken automotive belt (A/C, P/S, Serpentine, etc., etc.). That's where its good to have a wife.
28 years a mountaineer, and since moving to OH, the only thing that has improved is my bad driving. And by that I mean, the buckeye bad driving habits have crept into my style.
Off topic, but when I see those beautiful letters (WV), I get a little excited. Sorry. I'll calm down now.

Greg
