Re: Hobby discussion

One hobby that I enjoy is quilting. Ok, on to better things - my husband and sons love to hunt, and since we live in Tanzania, they've been able to do their manly duty and put some meat on the table. My oldest daughter, Julia, even got in on the fun and went out with them for a day. She took a wildebeest - her one and only kill, so far, but watch out, cause she can shoot! haha

Off topic, but when I see those beautiful letters (WV), I get a little excited. Sorry. I'll calm down now.

The only reason I believed him when he told me that is because he's from WV. I was raised in WV.

I also lived a stint in a place called Possum Holler up next to Chesapeake. I lived in Huntington growing up so it was just a hop, skip and jump.

Now what's the wife for? Can't use her as an automotive belt either. But you might be able to make her get out and push.

That's cool Joy, but seriuosly, better than quilting?????

Just joking. There's nothing better than the adrenaline rush than when killing wild game. I went wild boar hunting down in FL once. Oh it was awesome! This thing, I shot it between the eyes, and it just kept charging at me tusks and all.

I started to shoot again and the guy that was with me told me not to. It finally dropped dead at my feet.

Oh but that made some mean sausage and barbecue! A lot leaner than regular pork so you have to add some salt pork, but it was yummm!

What does a wildebeest taste like?

Wives used to wear hose that were good for an emergency fan belt. Those things are strong!

I know the area fairly well, but not too well. I grew up in Mercer Co., WV and went to school at WV Tech in Montgomery and then Marshall in Huntington. Mom lived in Winfield so I went through Chesapeake every other week during my stint as a Civil Engineering major.

As for my hobbies (since that is what we are discussing here): I once wrote in my engineering orientation class that if I didn't become an engineer, I might drive a train instead (groan). I do model railroading (although there is not a lot of time for that).

Okay, I grew up in Huntington. The only thing I did at Marshall University is deliver pizzas, LOL!

I love those railroads. My great uncle used to have a basement full of model railroads set up and he'd let me run them. Had one that actually produced smoke and made noise. I loved those landscapes too!

There's a guy that owns a hardware store near here (VA) and every Christmas he sets up an entire town with the railroad tracks entertwined all through it. It has a drive-in movie theater that actually plays a movie on a small screen, an antique car lot, a pond with geese that are floating on the water, a school with children out on the playground....it has tons of stuff and it is huge. The local schools use his train display as an outing.

It brought back such happy memories of my childhood I cried like a baby when I first saw it.

If my memory serves me correctly, Huntington Art Galleries used to set up model train displays...or at least that's the way I remember it.

Have fun!

Steph

Re: Hobby discussion

Steph wildebeest tastes similar to beef - not gamy tasting at all. Another meat that we really enjoy is gazelle. We never would have guessed it, based on their diet of scrub, but it is the best tasting meat we've had here, and it MUCH better than any venison I've had. We just had some tonight, as a matter of fact.

Wow, I can't imagine something tasting better than venison, except for wild boar, LOL! Hunting sure is a nice hobby to have. It sure beats grocery store prices too! For the cost of a bullet or two and the fuel to get you to wherever you hunt...not bad. Think of me when you bite into that game! I haven't had any deer since before Christmas.

It's a small World Wide Web after all. Delivering Pizza for Domino's helped me through Marshall. It's a good job if you can get it (and your car is in reasonable shape and your good at maintaining it and if you can stand the smell of pizza being absorbed by your apolstery). I loved delivering in Huntington. BOTH the streets AND the avenues are numbered (at least on the east side of town). The Westside avenues have you learnin' a little History. From the River south: (Virginia doesn't count), Washington, Adams, (W. 5th Ave. Doesn't count either. It's more of an alley from what I remember of it), Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, and Van Buren.

Maybe this should go in another thread about reminiscing or something. Oh, Well.

Wow, since before Christmas? I haven't had any venison since about 5:30pm (not to rub it in or anything).

Re: Hobby discussion

We have learned to be very inventive here in Tanzania. A couple of days ago, my daughter made biscuits and sausage gravy - the sausage being gazelle sausage. What's nice about gazelle is that it's so mild, you can use it in a variety of ways. Makes great sausage, and is leaner.

Rub it in all you want, LOL!

I had someone try to give me some but my freezer was full of rabbit. I've got an upright that is plum full of food. Bless the Lord!

I'm a sports buff so sports pretty much occupy my free time. I do play the electric guitar though.
