| Was Timothy Once Saved Always Saved?
1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself , and them that hear thee. Timothy was an evangelist in Ephesus when Paul wrote this letter to Him. In addition, let me call to attention the fact that He had received the gift of the Holy Spirit from Paul. 2 Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. See also 1 Timothy 4:14 just 2 verses before verse 16, our introductory text. Many people in the religious world today try and teach that a child of God can not so sin as to lose their salvation and those who do return to sin were never saved in the first place. OK... With that said, I don't think anyone out there is going to try and say that Timothy was not saved, especially in view of the fact that he had the gift of the Holy Spirit. I cannot fathom anyone claiming that an unsaved person could have in anyway the gift of the Holy Ghost. I think it's quite obvious that Timothy was indeed a saved individual. If a saved individual cannot so sin as to lose their eternal salvation, then why did Paul say this to Timothy? Why would Timothy be told to continue in the doctrine of Christ in order to save himself if he could not lose his salvation? Once Saved Always Saved for the saints on earth is not supported in scripture.
