| Re: Christians, Government and Morality
It would seem that any elected office would require one to realize that many matters would "splash" on him/her in the doing of the job, just in the nature of the circumstance; sort of "in for a penny, in for a pound".

I am thankful for those members of the Lord's Church that bring the truth (John 17:17) into the offices they hold. May they serve faithfully and in accordance with his word. Kindly, Don

I've always believed that We as Christians should protect our rights in the nation because it is the only nation that gives Christians a right to belief what they want to, as Paul used his Roman citizenship to do the will of God so must we. or so I believe.

As President, what would you do if the pope wanted to visit? Talk to him? If you do it legitimizes him in the world. I just love these hypotheticals! |

| Re: Christians, Government and Morality
A deceased member of our congregation, Spencer Benard, was the Lt. Governor of Oklahoma from '79-'87. Before that he spent 18 years in the state legislature. As far a I know, brother Bernard capably served the people of OK while maintaining the proper christian attitudes. He had an interest in several businesses around town. One of which was a ranch. Some of my friends worked for him on that ranch and they regularly commented on how pleasureable it was to work for him and how generously he treated his employees. He also had some tremendous fishing holes...oh wait, off topic... This past election I voted for 2 different members of a local church of Christ who were running for public office. One of them won and the other was defeated by the narrowest of margins. I'm grateful that a christian is serving in the legislature. As was mentioned earlier, I pray that she serves the people faithfully and in accordance with the will of God. |

| Re: Christians, Government and Morality
It may very well be that a faithful christian can serve in elected office as has been suggested, per the examples put forth. The hypotheticals put forth provide evidence that it might be possible, and the issue probably resolves between that person his God. One related biblical example is in Matt. 22:17ff; at least in that it involves matters (taxes)related to "Caesar" and matters related to God. Of course elected office is not in consideration, but one lesson here is that the Lord taught a principle. And perhaps there is a lesson about politics vs. spiritual matters in Luke 13:32. As we consider the present governor of Illinois, is there a lesson there? With Congress having a 9% approval rating, and the President having a 24% approval rating, politics seem less appealing than previously. As has been mentioned before, anyone involving themselves in public office are likely to be "splashed upon", involving matters over which they have no control. Therefore care must be taken in what might "rub off" in the process of political endeavor. |
