Temptation, the Church and the child of God

Temptation, the Church and the child of God

What can we learn from Jesus in how He handled temptation and what can we learn from how satan tried to tempt?

The most detailed account of a period of temptation is found in Luke 4. With each temptation

What is temptation?

Luke 4:2 Being fortyG5062 daysG2250 temptedG3985 ofG5259 theG3588 devil.G1228 AndG2532 inG1722 thoseG1565 daysG2250 he did(G3756) eatG5315 nothing:G3762 andG2532 when theyG846 were ended,G4931 he afterwardG5305 hungered.G3983

Strongs G3985
πειράζω
peirazō
pi-rad'-zo

From G3984; to test (objectively), that is, endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline: - assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt (-er), try.

Luke 4:13 AndG2532 when theG3588 devilG1228 had endedG4931 allG3956 the temptation,G3986 he departedG868 fromG575 himG846 for a season.G891 G2540

Strongs G3986:
πειρασμός
peirasmos
pi-ras-mos'

From G3985; a putting to proof (by experiment [of good], experience [of evil], solicitation, discipline or provocation); by implication adversity: - temptation, X try.

First Temptation:

Matthew 4
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Consider this:

Jesus was hungry and Himself, God, at the same time. There would be nothing wrong with turning stones to bread would there? Later in Mark 6:30-44 Jesus did a miracle to feed five thousand people and again in Mark 8:1-9 He again fed the people, four thousand. So what could be wrong with Jesus turning the stones into bread?

The answer is not as obvious as one might assume. Many believe that law is a list of do not’s, such as the ten commandments and no other reasoning is involved and often, are under the impression that if they want to do something and the “do not” is not found in the bible, it is an authorized activity.

In this situation, there is nothing wrong with this activity, yet Jesus rejects it. The question is not “what is being asked” but “who” is doing the asking and what is satan’s ulterior motive?

To do ANYTHING that satan suggests, is to obey him. Satan wanted Jesus to do what He suggested and not trust that His Father would care for Him at this time where any person, after 40 days of fasting, would be starving, malnourished and teetering upon death’s door.

God had told Jesus that He had a task to do in His life, fasting in the desert it seems was part of that. For Jesus, to obey the Father’s Word more important than the perseveration of the flesh and that is why Jesus responded:

4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

And similarly in response to His apostles and teaching the woman at the well:

John 4:34

34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

Jesus HAD to resist satan, no matter what he asked, suggested, commanded, insinuated or even hinted at. To compromise on any level would equate to total obedience to satan’s will and a total rejection to the will of the Father. No matter if it were as innocent as preserving His own life by eating bread when hungry.

Second Temptation:

5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”

Consider this:

What could be tempting about this question, even if it obviously a test?
For one, please notice that satan quotes scripture in attempts to give supposed authority to what he is saying. It shows that not all scripture used, is used correctly. Also, if Jesus did not hold scripture as important and authoritative, satan would not have used them, after all, how could Jesus not respect His own Word?
Jesus knew He was God and the Jews should worship Him. He was to draw all people and redeem the Jews to Him, John 12:32.

Satan seemed to want to take advantage of Jesus’ desire to do what the Father wanted Him to do and He, Himself, wanted to accomplish, which was to be lifted up before all men. Again, Jesus did not choose to take advantage of the short-cut satan offered.

By rejecting satan, Jesus did the will of the Father, not satan or the flesh.
To take this route to a type of fleshly glory would have been easier than being killed on a cross as the Father planned and Jesus refers to later in His life, in John 12:27-36, His impending crucifixion.

This is not the only time satan tries to tempt Jesus in this way as we see in Matthew 16:22-24. Satan takes advantage of Peter’s feelings to try to influence Jesus to not offer Himself up and in Matthew 27:42 where satan struck at Jesus through those that taunted Him at the crucifixion.

Third Temptation:
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

Conclusion:
In this third temptation, although similar to the temple temptation, this time it is on a world wide scale and satan becomes so bold as to come out and say what his goal truly is, to be worshiped by Jesus, God in the flesh, thus take the place of the Father as God.

In response to satan, Jesus uses scripture to rebuke and state the law of God,

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.”

When Jesus had rejected satan, he left and Jesus was then comforted by the angles of God.

11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Observations:

1. Satan looks for weakness so we must keep our faith in God’s promises and Word. Satan tried to take advantage of Jesus in His weakened state. Satan tried to play upon Jesus’ passionate love for His people, the Jews and the world.

1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

Ephesians 6:16
above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

2. Satan can take advantage of our good intentions, goals, desires, goals and even partial truth and twist them toward his agenda. Satan used the prophesies/scriptures and even twisted the will of the Father and Jesus own will to not actually do what God’s will but his own. Any other path or pattern was not God’s but satans.

By quoting the will of God, His Word, Jesus turned away satan. Satan is powerless against this, for it is the sword of the Spirit of God, Ephesians 6:17. By doing only the will of God as was given, Jesus was able to abide in Truth and resist temptation. Jesus did only what the Father says and wants, nothing more, John 5:30. We are to do the same, 1 Peter 2:21.

3. Satan is a liar. He wants people to not use scripture, because he is powerless against it. He wants us to use scripture incorrectly to teach our ideas, even thought there are other verses that conflict. He wants us to not look at the scriptures as a source and guide with authority but instead, with doubt and liberty of all opinion. This is exactly what he did with Jesus. He misused scripture and even when it is quoted correctly; it is twisted in motive, meaning and context, which would have lead to an unrighteous end. This game of satan’s is nothing new and he not only played it with Jesus but also the church today.

In the church today, there are many false teachings but also a push to not even teach the Truth. For example, some believe that the gospel basics (milk of the Word only, not the doctrine of the apostles through the Spirit) is the only enforceable teaching and all the rest of scripture is open for all to decide on their own.

This concept is contrary to the entire goal of the Holy Spirit when Jesus said He would guide the apostles onto all the rest of the Truth and the Holy Spirit would guide us onto all Truth, John 16:13. No matter how reasonable something sounds, if God says differently, then it is our duty as the church to abide in God’s Word since to do otherwise is to do satan’s will, just as we saw in Jesus’ temptation.

John 16:13
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Or when satan does not want us to correct sin in the church because it is uncomfortable at times and can even be insulting to those who are sensitive and learn they are wrong or hold to false teaching. Satan would have us be quiet or water down but 2 Timothy 3:16, the Word of God, says differently.

2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

4. Satan wanted Jesus to go outside the plan and pattern. Notice that Jesus had to go to the cross and all through scripture, He could not be killed or diverted from the plan because often Jesus said, “My time has not yet come”, John 7:6. The church has been given a plan and pattern as well, and by no less of an author with authority, God.

To go off the pattern and plan the Father had for Jesus by jumping off the temple, eating bread during His fast or worshiping satan for power, would have put satan in the place of authority. Any of the paths were wrong son long as it was different from the one path God set to the cross that Jesus had to follow to fulfill all righteousness.

5. The church, the children of God have a pattern and path to walk and a Word to abide in.

Philippians 3:17
Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.

2 Thessalonians 3:9
not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us.

Hebrews 6:12

that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

As an obedient child of God, if we hear anything, be wise, check it against scripture, make sure it is not satan twisting the scriptures to deceive us, Acts 17:10-12, 2 Peter 3:15-17. The Truth is in the whole counsel of God and that is what we are to study to know the path of righteousness, Psalm 119:105.

If our own belief and teaching is shown to be doubtful because it is not in scripture or not all scripture agrees with it, let us not be deceived and love God enough to study all the scriptures to show ourselves approved 2 timothy 2:15.

The next time we are tempted to do anything other than the will of God, which is the Word, check it against the Word, for in doing so, we can then see our way through our problem, temptation, trial or issue, no matter what it is. If it was the tool and sword against satan, Psalm 18:29-31, Ephesians 6:17, and God’s Son Himself used and modeled for us, we are to abide in His example and follow no other Way

John 14:6

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Re: Temptation, the Church and the child of God

Brother Steven,

Excellent topic and introduction of the key verses.

Notice how Satan ever so slightly alters, adulterates, distorts the actual TRUTH?

Satan is the originator of temptation. Well, in most cases for the most of christians, Satan is not personally involved with each of us...demons scattered across the world do the same as he. Satan is not omnipresent...unlike Almighty God.
Quote:
2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Temptations are the wiles and devices of hostile fallen angelic beings to trip us up morally and interfere with our relationship with God.

Quote:
Romans 7:14-25 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. ...
Demons (along with Satan) work hard in making christians chase our tail...sin, repent, confess, ask for forgiveness...repeat ad-nausium - seemingly endlessly hindered by besetting sin and habits of sin that constantly war within us. Notice that I said seemingly: for here is the ...
Quote:
Romans 7:25 - 8:1 So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Why do demons work so hard to keep us tied up in sin? The reason is to keep the following passage from becoming a reality in our lives:
Quote:
Romans 6:1-14 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Freedom from the dominion of sin.
Quote:
Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
The deliverance from evil...from sin, is what most christians are missing in their life. In baptism we are joined with Christ on the Cross, and are set free. Demons keep our dead flesh jumping like frog legs in a frying pan...the legs are dead. So, how do demons keep our dead flesh jumping with sin?
Quote:
Ephesians 6:11-12 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. ... Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. ...
Once we are aware that this is spiritual warfare, then we can become better prepared to render temptations less effective, if not totally defeated in our day to day lives.

Demons, why are they trying to prevent? They want us to fail, to fall from grace...again. What they fear most is that the following passage will become a reality in our life:
Quote:
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
At the point this passage becomes a reality in your life, temptation is mostly ineffective. What's more than they can do?
Quote:
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Luke 22:31 Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
At this point you will see the reality of our warfare and their naked hostility and you will hear their roar...they stop playing games and get serious and begin outright attacks. But the shield of faith and the rest of the armor of God becomes as real to you as anything in your life now is.

What we need to do is begin at the beginning...what is sin and why it is a problem, and what it is NOT. That sets the ley of the land...of the battlefield. The actual temptations are tactics upon the battlefield.
Quote:
2 Kings 6:15-17 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? 16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
That is what you would see around you today if your eyes were opened to the reality.

Re: Temptation, the Church and the child of God

Quote:
Ephesians 3:8-13 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery...

Matthew 6:9-13 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
"Your kingdom come"...a statement of divine militancy. God's throne is effectively acting, so the "heavenlies" are where Christ is already effectively Lord, with all the Powers under His sovereignty...
Quote:
Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Matthew 22:44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
...even though not yet under His control.

Christ's provisional revolutionary government has already been formed in exile, and parts of the country are already effectively under its sovereignty. The old regime, however, still holds the capital and the loyalty of the army and practices brutal and indiscriminate warfare against its own people in desperate attempt to preserve its privilege and wealth. But the outcome, however long in coming, is assured.

The believer has already been established in a kind of "liberated zone", although with this caveat: those who are in this "liberated zone" are not at all free from the possibility of collusion with the old Powers or even of apostasy. But they are provided a space of relative freedom from determination by the Powers.

Quote:
Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
As christians called to battle in operating behind enemy lines, we are to aggressively enforce Satan's defeat by the Cross of Jesus Christ and His shed Blood.
Quote:
Ephesians 5:8-14 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light."
Thus it remains the task of every christian not only to proclaim to people that they have been redeemed from the darkness that once held them in bondage, but also to proclaim to the Powers that they are not supreme. That Christ is their sovereign also.
Quote:
Philippians 2:10-11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
That those human beings under their dominion belong to Christ.

Quote:
Ephesians 3:8-13 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him. Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
The church, as individual christians, declares Christ's lordship both over the Powers and the unredeemed. We declare God's purpose in redeeming all men (2Cor 5:18-21). We then turn toward the Powers. We do not pray against the Powers. We pray only to its Lord. We proclaim the defeat of the Powers, We declare that Christ as Lord is now displacing the power of the Powers over the unredeemed peoples they have been keeping in bondage. We not only inform the Powers of their defeat by the Lord in His church, we enforce their defeat by our faith and delegated authority in Christ. This is the manifold wisdom of God made known by the church to the rulers and authorities in the heavens.
Quote:
2 Corinthians 4:3-7 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

Re: Temptation, the Church and the child of God

Thank you brother. A book could be written on this topic. Matter of fact, maybe we should keep this theme going in this thread and make a book from it. :-) What do ya think?

We could have all the teachers write a portion regarding how satan and evil works, after all we are in continual battle and in these times, opening the eyes of the blind is of all importance.

Brother Steven,

A good idea. Much of what is discussed in this forum could be gathered into a written format such as a book. Reminds me a lot of the discussions in the early days of the Gospel Advocate.

Quote:
Revelation 2:10 ... be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
If we are ignorant or blind to how Satan and evil spirits work, then staying faithful til death becomes very difficult...like a blind man fighting off a bunch of thugs - if he could only see he can effectively defend himself without injury and send his attackers to flight.
