| Water to Wine
In Jn.2:1-11 I believe Jesus uses the miracle to symbolize what He is about to do. He takes water, from the 6 stone pots used for Jewish custom of purification, the Jews used the OT to cleanse themselves physically from sin, an external process. Jesus takes the OT and turns it into New Wine - life giving - to be taken internally, to cleanse our hearts, our conscience. The OT is only history but with Christ it is the exciting Word of God, Jesus reveals Himself in it. Lk.24:44-49 Jesus is able to take the ordinary and turn it into the extra-ordinary. He is able to take our mundane life and turn it into a vibrant life, ready and fit for the Master"s use. RJ |

Well, that is a thought. But it is this student’s opinion that to say that this miracle symbolizes anything is, well, speculation. My Bible tells me the purpose of Jesus’ miracle was done in order to “manifest His Glory, and His disciples believe in Him” (John 2:11).

See also John 20:30-31, And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

It seems to me that Jesus was simply granting his mother's request. It even appears that she was aware of a miracle to come because in the next sentence after he basically said to Mary, "what do you expect me to do about the lack of more wine", she told the servants to do whatever Jesus says.

I think Mary knew that Jesus had special abilities. Perhaps this was the first miracle, but possibly she had seen evidence of powers beforehand. We already know she had apprently forgotten or did not understand His Parentage, for we see later she was with His brothers and sisters to come and essentially take Him away as a crazy man.
